Aloo Matar


Aloo Matar is a popular vegetarian Indian dish that can be had as a delicious main course and most people enjoy it. Let us have a look at its recipe.

Ingredients (3-4 servings) :

  • Potatoes - 3-4 
  • Green Peas - 250-300 g
  • Onions - 2
  • Tomatoes - 3-4
  • Cumin seeds (jeera) - 1 tbsp
  • Ginger Paste - 1 tsp
  • Garlic - 6-7 cloves
  • Green Chillies - 2-3 
  • Asafetida (Hing) - 2 pinches
  • Whole Garam Masalas - Cinamon - 2 inch piece, Green Cardamom - 3-4, Whole black pepper - 5-6, Cloves (Laung) - 4-5
  • Curd (Dahi) - 1/4th cup
  • Powdered spices - Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp, Kashmiri chilli powder - 1 tsp, Garam Masala Powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander leaves - 1/2 cup
  • Salt to taste
  • Sugar - 1 tbsp
Method :
  • Make two separate purees - one of onions and whole garam masalas  and one of tomatoes in a mixer.
  • Heat oil in a utensil and add finely chopped garlic, finely chopped green chillies and cumin seeds to it and fry till the garlic turns golden in colour.
  • Now, add the onion puree and asafetida to it. Fry it till the onion becomes golden in colour.
  • Now, add ginger paste, salt and sugar to it and fry for a minute and add powdered spices to it. Fry it for another minute and add the tomato puree to it. Fry it till it forms a thick paste and the oil separates from it.
  • Add beaten curd to the mixture and fry it for around a minute. 
  • Now, add chopped potatoes and green peas to it and fry it for around 5 minutes. 
  • Add water according to the desired consistency , cover it with a lid and let it cook on medium flame till the potatoes and green peas are soft.
  • Just before turning off the stove, add finely chopped coriander leaves to it.
