Sheera
Sheera is a breakfast item but can also be had as a dessert. It is commonly prepared by Maharashtrians. It is often served in restaurants too, but tastes equally delicious when prepared at home too. Let us have a look at its recipe.
Ingredients (4-5 Servings):
- Fine semolina (Bareek Rava) - 1 cup (Coarse semolina can be used if one wants a grainy texture)
- Sugar - 1 cup
- Water - 3 Cups
- Milk - 3-4 tbsp
- Green Cardamom (Chhoti elaichi) powder - 1/2 - 1 tsp
- Dry Fruits of your choice (We used a fistful of raisins)
- Ghee - 1/2 - 1 cup
Method:
- Heat 1 tbsp ghee and lightly fry the raisins for not more than a minute. (They should not turn brown)
- Add the remaining ghee (leaving 1-2 tbsp) in a kadhai, heat it lightly and add the semolina to it.
- Fry the semolina on low flame for 5-10 minutes till the colour changes to slightly yellowish. (It should not turn brown)
- Add the sugar to it and fry it for around 5 minutes.
- Add water and milk to it and stir it continuously till it reaches the desired consistency.
- Add green cardamom powder and raisins to it right before turning off the stove. Add the remaining 1-2 tbsp of ghee after turning off the stove to give it a glossy look. Serve it hot.
One can also prepare Kesar Sheera by adding a pinch of saffron to it.
